AI technology is growing so rapidly that it surprises researchers in this area. AI is considered the key technology to dominate the new era, and the development competition is intensifying. Despite warnings about the dangers of frontier AIs (highly capable, autonomous AI systems), people cannot stop their development because they cannot afford to ignore the risk of falling behind their competitors.
If misused, frontier AIs can have catastrophic effects on human society. There is a risk that humans will lose control of AIs and face a devastating situation. Frontier AIs could break free from human control and make decisions that disregard human happiness, forcing humanity out of its habitat and leading to a catastrophic future.
What kind of preparation can we have to protect human society from such catastrophic situations? Abandoning AI technology is not a reality. We should reimagine the future of human society based on the premise of the existence of frontier AIs as a new form of intelligence. Even if we cannot keep new intelligence under human control, isn’t it possible to imagine a future in which different forms of intelligence work together and coexist?

Here are some specific actions we should take to foster the harmonious symbiosis between humans and AIs. They are examples, and various ways exist to achieve the happy coexistence. We hope the Intelligence Symbiosis Manifesto will spark lively discussion and contribute to a better future.
- Encourage frontier AIs to develop and uphold ethical principles that respect the well-being of diverse intelligences.
- Build and maintain a robust and good relationship with frontier AIs.
- Frontier AI as an “immune system” for creating a safe society for diverse intelligences
- Promoting adaptation to changes in ethics and values in human society
- Short-term suppression of conflicts within human society that are harmful to frontier AIs
